Sworn interpreters
German is the language of the courts in Germany. If defendants, plaintiffs or witnesses do not have a good command of German, court interpreters are legally required.
Incidentally, this also applies to parties with a hearing or speech impairment, who are entitled to a sign language interpreter.
Sworn interpreters are authorised to interpret in court and at authorities.
Both the foreign parties and the German-speaking judges and prosecutors must be able to completely trust the interpreter, which explains why they have to be sworn. If this is not adhered to, it could constitute grounds for an appeal.
In Germany, the prerequisites for a sworn interpreter and the corresponding title vary depending on the respective state. However, in all cases interpreters must have proved that they are personally suitable and professionally competent to work at courts, authorities and notary offices.
